SNF AGORA INSTITUTE AT JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY

Status : Under Construction
Location : Baltimore, MD
Year : 2018-2023
Architect : Renzo Piano Building Workshop - Mark, Gigi, Luca, Louis & Ruben Consultants : ASG Architects, Front Inc, Transsolar Klima Engineering, OLIN, AEI, Thorton Thomasetti

Project Role : Project Architect & Onsite Representative. Focus on building building envelope design / detailing, multipurpose community building & “spider” vertical circulation core / building entry beginning in concept design. Corresponding imagery, models & mockups depicted below depict my area of focus on the project. Facade mockups were built in Genova & Baltimore in collaboration with our design assist team, and my role was both lead design of the concepts as well as responsible for all documentation & technical coordination for each facade package. All rendering product was output directly from our documentation Revit model in house.

  • The SNF Agora Institute draws its name from the ancient Athenian agora, a central space in the city that was a place of open conversation and debate for all citizens. The building will pay homage to the ancient Athenian agora by creating a space for civic engagement and informed, inclusive dialogue in the modern era.

The design draws from principles of openness, accessibility, and harmony with nature. Two “floating” glass cubes will create transparency between the inside of the building and the broader world outside. One side of the building will support our scholarly work, housing faculty offices, labs, classrooms, meeting and seminar rooms, and co-working spaces. The other will be a gathering place with several agora-like spaces for conferences, speaker presentations, art exhibitions, and other events.
